Adams Lutheran (p. 11) – Adams Lutheran Church is a real church outside the village of Argyle, WI (pop. 823). It is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

Aldi (p. 44) – A discount supermarket chain.

All-conference (p. 55) – An player selected for the “all-star” team at a conference.

Beltline (p. 58) – A U-shaped cross-section of highways that loops under Madison.

Bethke (p. 12) – Bethke Heating and Air Conditioning is an HVAC business based out of Verona and Madison.

B town (p. 82) – Usually a reference to Bloomington, Indiana. No clear relation here.

Bupkis (p. 86) – slang for nothing

Cenex (p. 12)- A gas station/convenience store chain

Commissary (p. 21) – Refers to the store within a prison where inmates can buy goods.

Cooch (p.3) – slang for female genitals

Data roaming (p. 29) – When a phone leaves the range of its network provider it is “roaming”. Users can sometimes keep a signal in these areas by agreeing to data roam and “hop on” a local network that your provider has an agreement with. However, some provider make you pay extra to roam.

Disability (p. 23) – Government-sponsored disability payments.

Faulting (p. 76) – In bowling, this means going past the foul line at the beginning of the lane.

Fentanyl patches (p. 23) – A prescription opiate used to treat severe pain. Absorbed through the skin with a patch.

German chocolate cake (p. 82) – Chocolate cake with coconut-pecan icing

Grafton, WI (p. 5) – Village of 11,000 people north of Milwaukee. Several counties east of “Reynolds,” a 1.5-2 hour drive.

Greenfield, WI (p. 20) – A suburb to the west of Milwaukee. There are not real prisons there.

Gyroscope (p. 38) – A device consisting of a wheel or disk mounted so that it can spin rapidly about an axis which is itself free to alter in direction. The orientation of the axis is not affected by tilting of the mounting, so gyroscopes can be used to provide stability or maintain a reference direction in navigation systems, automatic pilots, and stabilizers.

Hawk Ridge Winery (p. 70) – Could refer to a winery in Connecticut by this name, but more likely refers to Hawk’s Mill Winery in Browntown, WI, in Green County (1-2 hours from Reynolds, WI).

Hooch (p. 26) – liquor, usually bad whiskey

Jaeger (p. 2) – Jägermeister is a German liqueur, more popular in the U.S. than in Germany. It is made from a secret recipe of 56 herbs, blooms, roots and fruits. The only known ingredients are cinnamon-bark and ginger root. Alcohol content is 35%. Mostly used for shots – a well established frat party booze.

Megabus (p. 74) – Brand of low-cost buses that go across the U.S. and Canada.

Miss Priss (p. 3) – “A girl who is stuck up and a goody two shoes and thinks everything is childish. She believes she is better than others, which is reflected in her attitudes and actions. Girls generally start qualifying for this label around middle school. Some grow out of it, but others retain the label even in adulthood.” (Urban Dictionary)

Mofo (p. 3) – Abbreviated form of “motherfucker”

MS (p. 57) – Multiple sclerosis is a disease in which the immune system eats away at the protective covering of nerves, causing pain, fatigue, impaired coordination, and sometimes vision loss.

Mullein (p. 6) – MUHL-lin is an invasive flower species found throughout the U.S with deep roots and stalks 5-10 feet tall. A nuisance even after the plant dies.

New Trier (p. 35 )- A very, very rich high school in Winnetka, northern suburb of Chicago. Check out the several pages of entries on Urban Dictionary.

Parole – the release of a prisoner temporarily or permanently before the completion of a sentence, on the promise of good behavior.

Percocet (p. 87) – Brand of highly addictive pain medication. An opiate. Prescription required.

Ridgeway, WI (p. 20)- A tiny village in Iowa County, north of Lafayette County. This is too close to be the prison Jaycee goes to. There are no prisons in Ridgeway.

Screwdriver scene (p. 18) – This infamous plot line from Orange is the New Black can be found in Season 1, Episode 4: Imaginary Enemies.

Shelling peas (p. 6) – Removing the shell of pea pods.

Teddies (p. 16) – A garment which covers the torso and crotch in the one garment. It is a similar style of garment to a one-piece swimsuit or bodysuit, but is typically looser and more sheer. The garment is put on by stepping into the leg holes and pulling the garment up to cover the torso.

Tramadol (p. 87) – A highly addictive opiate used to to treat moderate to severe pain. Prescription required.

Tupperware party (p. 16) – A Tupperware party is run by a Tupperware “consultant” for a host who invites friends and neighbors into his or her home to see the product line.

Weed pen (p. 29) – A vaping device used specially for cannabis.

Winnetka (p. 34) – A village on the north side of Chicago. One of the richest places in the nation and the richest in Illinois.

Xanax (p. 38) – A prescription sedative used to treat anxiety.
